Events held on Oct 24th, Rotary World Polio Day.
To name a few, on Oct 24, the Rotary Club of Elmbrook held a bike ride and the Rotary Club of Milwaukee lit up the Hoan Bridge purple to symbolize the efforts of eradicating polio for good!
Before dusk, the viewing locations to witness the Lighting of the Hoan Bridge included,
-- Milwaukee Riverfront Boat Launch
-- Milwaukee Riverwalk on East Erie Street right before the Milwaukee Pierhead Light.
According to the LightTheHoan website, these are the best two public places to experience the lighting of the bridge.
Why Purple Pinkie?
World Polio Day, which is on October 24th every year, is also sometimes referred to as “Purple Pinkie Day”. This is because during National Immunization Days kids have their pinkies marked with purple ink that lasts for 30 days, to ensure they are not vaccinated more than once.

We have come a long way since Rotary made the promise to rid the world of polio back in 1985 but there are still enormous challenges to overcome.
To support the polio eradication efforts and commemorate the past 39 years, Rotary District 6270 (SE Wisconsin), with the support of our club members, has a goal to raise $39,000 toward the End Polio Now campaign.
Please join us now through 12/31/2024 with a donation either online by clicking the "Donate Today" button (upper right) OR by check. If by check,

World Polio Day is a chance to celebrate progress towards eradicating polio and to encourage people to take action to end the disease. Rotary districts and clubs around the world hold events and fundraisers to bring about awareness of the need for the continued fight. As we celebrate the successes of polio immunizations, we must also recognize the challenges that lie ahead. The recent global pandemic serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of vaccines. Viruses do not discriminate; they go where people go. Only through widespread immunization can we hope to shield ourselves from their devastating effects.
Rotary and other partners, welcomed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2007. Since 2013, the Gates Foundation has matched every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication 2-to-1, currently up to $100 million per year.
Since we started the fight against polio, we’ve reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 percent and reached nearly three (3) billion children in 122 countries with the vaccine. There are fewer polio cases today than ever before, but we will not stop until we reach zero. If polio is not eradicated, hundreds of thousands of children could be paralyzed. Global health care costs would rise dramatically, and many children’s quality of life would be drastically diminished.
Join us in the fight to end polio and help us save lives and give a child a chance at a prosperous future.
