The Great Invocation Debate: Prayer, Invocation, or Moment of Silence?

This question often faces clubs at the beginning of each year, as new leadership takes its place, and old questions can resurface. What is the "right" answer for your club?

Well, it only took four days - until July 4th, but as I think every District Governor before me has, I've been asked about whether a religious prayer, a non-denominational invocation, or a moment of silence is "correct."

Several factors come into play here.

First and foremost, Rotary International is explicitly non-denominational. This means that while spirituality and ethical reflection are valued, no single religious perspective is endorsed or required.

Rotary International does not directly constrain clubs' choices as to the "flavor" of their invocations, if any. This autonomy is a hallmark of the Rotary structure, allowing for a diversity of practices that reflect the preferences and traditions of local club members.

While they are members of Rotary International, Rotary Clubs are separate organizations with their own bylaws and constitutions. If the club's governing documents do not specify constraints on the type of invocation, it is up to the club to decide.

Ultimately, the board of directors is responsible for making decisions on behalf of the club. According to Robert's Rules of Order, the board holds the ultimate decision-making authority, while the president is responsible for implementing those decisions and providing day-to-day leadership.

When it comes to choosing the type of invocation, the board should consider establishing broad consensus among members. If consensus cannot be achieved, the board must make a decision, keeping in mind the Rotary Four-Way Test:

  1. Is it the truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

In short, it's up to the board. Choose wisely, and ensure that the decision aligns with the values and principles of Rotary International.
